Choral concert to support Uganda Missionary

Paul-Jeffreys.jpgBy Fred Payton. A choral concert to support the work of Uganda missionary Paul Jeffreys will be held April 29 at 7 p.m. at St. Alban’s Cathedral.

The evening, called “Songs for Paul”, will feature the Cathedral-based choral group ‘Men of the Way’ with noted Prince Albert musicians Dave Monette and Bob Hayes, as well as guest artists, including flautist Twylla Pederson Gange, sopranos Mary Ann Kirkby and Lisa Olson.

Admission to the concert is by free-will offering, with all proceeds to Bishop McAllister College, Uganda. Refreshments will be served following the concert.

Last October, Canon Paul Jeffries, principal of the Bishop McAllister College in Uganda, paid a visit to the Cathedral Church of Saint Alban the Martyr in Prince Albert.

Following Canon Jeffries’ visit, the Cathedral Sunday School decided that they wished to raise money for student programmes at the school. As a result, they have started a programme known as “Pennies for Paul”.

Not to be outdone by the youth of the Cathedral, members of The Men of the Way, a choral group directed by Father Ken Lyons, decided that they also wished to raise money for the school.

The Men of the Way regularly sing at services at the Cathedral, and have performed at St. John’s Market in Saskatoon, as well as for the Cansurmount Picnic, during the Festival of Trees at the Rawlinson Centre in Prince Albert, and at the City’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. They are comfortable singing both sacred and secular music, and have a mixture of both types of music which they will perform at the concert.
