By Susan Harris. On Thursday, May 17th, the Reverend Doctor Robert Darwin Crouse, Canon Theologian of the Diocese of Saskatchewan, was awarded an honourary Doctor of Divinity by the University of King's College in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Dr. Crouse graduated from King's with a BA in 1951. Following further study at Trinity College at the University of Toronto and Harvard University, where he received a PhD, he went on to teach at Bishop's College in Quebec, Dalhousie University, and finally, at King's. Over the years, Dr. Crouse has become an internationally-recognized medieval scholar, teaching not only in Canada but also at the Pontifical Patristics Institute, the Augustinianum in Rome, Italy, the only non-Roman Catholic ever to be invited to do so. He was an important contributor to the development and growth of the Foundation Year Programme at King's and continued to teach until three or four years ago.
His service to the Anglican Church was also recognized. He served for a time on the Primate's Theological Commission. He continues to play the organ in his home parish of Petite Riviere and New Dublin. Dr.Crouse has been the mentor and pastor to many clergy and lay people over many years and continuing to the present day. The high regard and affection in which he continues to be held was exhibited at the King's Encaenia (Convocation) by the enthusiastic applause and standing ovation - led by this year's student graduates!
