May 27 – the Ven. Bede

Today we commemorate Bede, an Anglo-Saxon monk from the late 7th and early 8th centuries. He was a monk, and lived among the monastic community at Jarrow in Northumbria. It is said that he died peacefully and happily, while chanting the words “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be.”

Bede is most famous for writing The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, on the history of Christianity in England up to his era. (The text is available on the Internet, for example in 5 parts at this website)
