Canada Notes: Greater Partnership in Montreal and Quebec

The bishops and leaders of the dioceses of Montreal and Quebec are considering proposals that they commit themselves to a “process of discernment toward a fuller partnership as diocesan institutional churches.”

A preliminary draft of a memo of understanding between the two dioceses proposes the creation of a joint committee to direct a “discernment process” for an initial two-year period. The committee will look into “opportunities and obstacles to partnership” regarding mission priorities, financial issues and structures, canon and civil laws, church real estate, heritage building and cemetery issues, and Episcopal oversight and clerical leadership.

The draft, dated Dec. 17, was an offshoot of a meeting that took place in November between Bishop Barry Clarke of Montreal,  Bishop Dennis Drainville of Quebec, Archdeacon Janet Griffith Johnson, executive archdeacon of Montreal, and Archdeacon Garth Bulmer of Quebec.
