Archdeacon Bud Moot piloted the diocesan airplane. He enjoyed a special relationship with his parishioners.

Archdeacon John A Mackay

Archdeacon Mackay served in the Diocese before the arrival of the first bishop and spent half a century travelling the Diocese. He translated the 1918 Prayer Book into Cree.

Baptism of twins

This baptism of twins took place in the early 1940s. It is not clear where the photograph was taken.

Bishop Vicars Short

The Rt. Rev. H.V.R. Short was bishop from 1970 to 1985. An Anglo-Catholic traditionalist and former tutor at Trinity College, Toronto, his was a well-informed and theological voice at the General Synod. He helped to moderate some of the excesses of the late 60s and 70s and was involved in liturgical revision.

Bishop William Crump

Bishop William Crump (1960-1970) dancing at his retirement banquet after having been made an honorary chief in 1970. Bishop Crump lived for 23 years following his retirement and died in Winnipeg at the end of 1993. His ashes are interred in the columbarium at Winnipeg Cathedral. The chief presenting the headdress to the notably bald retiring bishop quipped, "since we figured you couldn't grow hair, we thought we would give you feathers."

Bishop Henry David Martin (1939-1959) preaches at the armories in Prince Albert during WW II during a war bonds rally. Note the radio technician in the background attending to the broadcast.

Bishop and Mrs. John McLean, late 1870s or early 1880s.

The first Bishop of Saskatchewan, John McLean, and his wife, both of whom are buried at St. Mary's cemetery, Prince Albert. The McLeans were good friends of the Charles Dickenses, and an interesting teenage correspondence between daughters of the two families survives. One of Charles Dickens' sons subsequently came to Saskatchewan as part of the Northwest Mounted Police.

Bishop Cyprian Pinkham and family

Bishop Cyprian Pinkham, the second Bishop of Saskatchewan, and his family. Bishop Pinkham, a Newfoundlander, divided the Diocese into two and for many years served as the Bishop of both Saskatchewan and Calgary Dioceses. When he finally raised an episcopal endowment for the new Calgary diocese, he resigned the See of Saskatchewan and continued to serve the Diocese of Calgary well into his old age.

In the front row, starting second from the left are Canon Mattheson (of Onion Lake) Archdeacon of Saskatchewan John A. Mackay, Chief John Ahtahkakoop, Bishop Cyprian Pinkham, Chief John Smith and Chief James Smith. Behind Bishop Pinkham, and slightly to his right, is the missionary John Hines of "Hines Mission" (present-day Ahtahkakoop Reserve). The photograph was likely taken outside the old St. Alban's pro-Cathedral on Central Avenue, Prince Albert, at the present-day location of the Forestry Centre building across from City Hall.

Waiting to say au revoir September 1942

It is unclear whether this photo was taken in September 1942 when the students of All Saints' Resdential School at La Ronge returned to the school by canoe after the summer holidays, or if it was taken as the children were about to return to their homes at the end of June that year.

Bishop Walter Burd and his family

Bishop Walter Burd was the sixth Bishop of Saskatchewan (1933-39). Here he is with his wife Elizabeth and two sons, Oliver on the left and Fred on the right, having a formal portrait taken on a Christmas visit to England in 1925. (They would later have a third child, a daughter, Helen, in Prince Albert two years later).

Oliver died tragically in 1948 in a fire in a hut in Antarctica a few months after he had arrived there with a British Navy expedition, and is buried at the site. Professor Frederick Burd lives in British Columbia. Helen (St. Clair) lives in Newark, DE.
